Florida's HATEPLOW formed in 1993 as an outlet for erstwhile Malevolent Creation guitarists Phil Fasciana and Rob Barrett to blow off some deathgrinding steam. Joining them would be erstwhile Revenant bassist Tim Scott, Sickness vocalist Kyle Symons, and drummer Larry Hawke. Furthering the Malevolent Creation link, Symons would later become that band's vocalist in the 2000s and Hawke drummed on a few mid ‘90s tracks. That lineup would record a demo in 1996 and then 1998's Everybody Dies debut album. Then came 2000's The Only Law is Survival with a new lineup, and after some touring, HATEPLOW would ultimately go on hiatus due to the members' various obligations to Malevolent Creation.
Sadly, Hawke would die of smoke inhalation – saving his pet from a house fire – before Everybody Dies was released. Utilizing that album as a tribute to their fallen drummer, HATEPLOW would plow on, undeterred, for a second album. Released in 2000, The Only Law is Survival saw the arrival of bassist Doug Humlack and drum-god Dave Culross, who was then playing with Malevolent Creation (and Suffocation, just prior to that). Here, HATEPLOW go even faster and more direct than that debut album; not for nothing is the record titled The Only Law is Survival. Stripping back some of their prior crude ‘n' rude themes for an even-crueler lyrical outlook, the 13-song / 34-minute album likewise integrates (and intensifies) where Malevolent Creation were going with the contemporaneous Envenomed. For those who love blastbeating and breakdowns, The Only Law is Survival is about as good as it gets. More importantly, it cemented HATEPLOW's place as diehards who never compromised!
