Originally self-released in 1996, Devour the Village was EXPLODING ZOMBIES's debut album following a couple cult demo tapes in 1993 and '94. While its self-release was unique for the time - even with black metal on the rise, death metal still figured into many underground labels' regimens, and some exclusively so - it takes nothing away from the brute power of the Michigan band's first full-length. Indeed, the emphasis here is BRUTALITY, from every direction: by turns barbarian and labyrinthine, mind-fucking and body-crushing, EXPLODING ZOMBIES' ever-restless attack took no easy routes nor offered any breathing room for the wary. Simply, their meat-shredder approach of blasting, cycloning, and beat-the-fuck-downing disoriented the senses while wave upon wave of dark, disgusting DEATH METAL washed over you; Devour the Village is thus aptly titled. In many ways, one could view this as an impossibly vast catalog of so-ignorant-it's-genius breakdowns, forever shredding the soul and sluicing the remains into the sewer EXPLODING ZOMBIES so resided until their dissolution a decade later.
Now, for its 30th anniversary, Devour the Village is seeing a LONG-overdue reissue on CD and, for the first time ever, vinyl courtesy of canoe-crushers HELLS HEADBANGERS. As a bonus, both of EXPLODING ZOMBIES first two demos - 1993's Piles of Oozing Brainsauce and 1994's Beyond Sufferage - will be added to both versions, making the vinyl a double-LP.
